“While Kayaking” is an original 12x12” acrylic painting on panel of the spot near the start of our journey down a section of the Flat River in Lowell, Michigan. All year before this painting, I had been working with a limited palette of colors, and I found myself missing some old favorites. I also had a dream about colors, which made me eager to change things up. So for this piece, I brought back in my favorites and tried some new colors on my palette, and I absolutely love what came of it!

I am always overcome with awe when in the middle of the water, surrounded by trees and a fluffy cloud-filled sky. I love the fresh air and even more, the reflections of the clouds and the trees! That morning had perfect kayaking weather, so my husband and I loaded up our four children and headed to the river.

We paddled for over, two hours, with scenic views all around. We saw so many turtles sunbathing on rocks that trip, and I probably drove my kids crazy by stopping to look at the trees and take photos of the clouds and with my repeated commentary on how pretty it all was.

This painting is one of the more adventurous-spirited ones of my Summer Collection. It is fresh and energetic with happy blues and greens. There are bits of the pink underpainting peeking out, and it carries within it the hopeful beginnings of early summer. It tells the story of a great morning kayaking in a peaceful place, discovering a new part of the river— a picture of the simple joys that come from exploring the beauty that surrounds us.

This one is a fantastic painting for outdoor lovers, especially for those who enjoy a good paddle down the river. The view helps one feel as though they are right there.
